This case-based session looks at how we approach pain management when patients don’t fit the textbook. Using common scenarios from first-opinion practice, we’ll briefly revisit the main types of pain we see - nociceptive, inflammatory, myofascial, visceral and neuropathic, and consider how recognising these can help guide practical analgesic choices.
A key theme will be managing osteoarthritis when NSAIDs aren’t straightforward, including patients that don’t tolerate them, have concurrent disease, or show biochemical changes during treatment, focusing on how to assess risk, monitor sensibly, and avoid both over- and under-treating pain.
Delegates should leave with greater confidence in adapting pain plans for complex patients and a set of pragmatic strategies they can apply immediately in practice.
