Medical mishaps and surgical slip ups: cautionary tales and tips from the VDS by Dan Holden BVetMed DVA DipECVAA CertSAM MRCVS & Peter Attenburrow BVSc CertSAO MRCVS.
Dan attended the Royal Veterinary College in London, where he qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 1991. After some time in traditional mixed practice in Ilminster, Dan returned to London and then to Langford, Bristol, to undertake postgraduate training in anaesthesia and critical care medicine. In 1997 he was awarded the Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia by the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), the highest level of specialist qualification. This was followed by another diploma (from the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia) and an RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Medicine, recognising an advanced level of knowledge in this area as well. Dan also developed the small animal ICU (intensive care unit) at Langford during his stay there.
In 2005 Dan jointly established the County Veterinary Clinic in Taunton. Dan also now works part time as a claims consultant for the VDS.
Peter started his practicing career as an equine and small animal vet, he then moved over to small animal practice and orthopaedics. For over ten years he provided a referral service in the South West of England, at St Davids Veterinary Clinic, in Small Animal Orthopaedics and joined the VDS in 2017. He is now a full time Claims Consultant for the VDS.
Learning from one's own mistakes is good. Learning from someone else's is even better. This presentation will use cases from the Society's archive to illustrate common themes in our caseload and provide some pointers on how not to get into hot water with your medical and surgical patients.
