Talk by Ian Wright BVMS, MSc, MRCVS. Ian has qualifications in Parasitology and has published a number of research papers. He is now Head of ESCCAP – the European Scientific Council for Companion Animal Parasites) UK and Ireland. Ian is a vet and one of the owners of The Mount Veterinary Practice.
The number of emerging parasitic diseases in the UK is increasing driven by pet importation, climate, migrating birds and environmental change. Novel parasites that have established in the UK such as Tick-borne encephalitis will be considered and those that have spread such as Angiostrongylus vasorum. Parasites that are being seen in imported pets that might establish here will also be considered including Leishmania infantum, Brucella canis and fly-borne nematodes.
