Pain assessment in rabbits and the Bristol Rabbit Pain Scale (BRPS)
Rabbits are popular pets, and as prey species they tend to mask signs of pain making it difficult for veterinary professionals to assess it without species-specific assessment tools. However, the management of pain is essential for their health and welfare and relies on detecting and measuring pain adequately.
A few pain scales specific for rabbits are available these days such as the Rabbit Grimace Scale (RbtGS), the CANCRS, and the RPBS. More recently, a novel pain assessment tool called the Bristol Rabbit Pain Scale (BRPS) was developed using a combination of focus groups and behavioural observation.
The objective of this lecture is to provide an overview of pain assessment in rabbits. It aims at developing a more accurate understanding of this topic, and at introducing the BRPS, a multidimensional pain scale specific to assess acute pain in pet rabbits.
